How do web 2.0 technologies help my business?
Apr 18th, 2007 by Laurie
There are four men: Chris, Thomas, Robert and Jeremiah talking in a scattered fashion in front of a packed house at the Web 2.0 Expo. This session is being “covered” in an IRC chat room, we are twittering it, the presenters are running three streaming cameras and using a Canon 5D to document this event so it can be blogged about later. The funny part about this event is that it’s all about how important all these technologies are to marketing and commerce. I think this ridiculous display of Web 2.0 hype is meant to show all the business owners here how powerful the tools are.
“So, how does this help my business?” is asked from the audience (to applause). The panelists just spent five minutes arguing about who’s business is big enough to answer her question. Now moderator just interrupted the panelist who won the biggest business contest. “So, how does it help her business?” No one can seem to answer the question.
As I was looking for bios, checking links and trying to get the WiFi to accept this post into the blogosphere they answered the question (some 20 minutes later). Are you ready? These web 2.0 tools are a way for you to monitor what people are saying about your brand. It is important to listen to the chatter and be able to move and change with what your users are saying.

Jeremiah, the panel did a great job of showing off 2.0 wonder, but there is still a gap between being able to use the technology and explaining to the masses how it will help them put food on the table. I think that was the point of yesterday’s session. We went to see four people who have mastered these technologies talk about how they would help us. I’m really glad I didn’t get frustrated and leave during the 20 minutes of trying to answer the question because you did answer it eventually.
